Nimesh & Sandhya greeted everyone present there with a beautiful welcome speech and a successful smile. This marked things like, knowing each other, bonding and a quality time well spent with fellow Windchimers!

There were chimes all around in the air, of glory, success and pride. From a great event to games & pool, it was a time well spent. Everybody enjoyed to their fullest – a moment to cherish!

The Significance of Facebook Brand Fans

Monday, September 16th, 2013

imageWell, there is no set idea to place a value on a single Facebook Fan. It totally depends; as all fans differ in their worth and the way a brand builds engagement on the page determines the potency of a fan. There are different categories that help in analyzing the effectiveness of a fan, who basically turn out to be either influencers, purchasers or the engaged ones. The value (in actual terms) of a brand’s fan base totally depends on how much that brand cares about its customers and followers. Therefore, one must consistently analyze how ‘FAN’tastic is their brand on social media.

When we are talking about Facebook Fans, one most important fact is that all fans are not equal and also that every brand should not turn to Facebook to acquire their business. For brand marketers, who plan to invest into the social media strategy for their brands, analysis of their return on investment and value of a fan is essential.

There are a set of equations we need to highlight when going further with analyzing the value of a fan.

Firstly, the value of Facebook fan depends mostly on your objectives in turn sustained by significant resources to help your brand page gain traction.
The cost of acquisition of a fan is not something on which the value of a fan is based upon. Infact, how clearly you align the value of the brand with the fan’s values determines the same.
Right content delivered by your brand page at the right time will foster amazing engagement.
Finally, be stable, consistent and regular in terms of building engagement with fans. This will help you extract the best value out of a fan over time.

imageTherefore, the value that one can put on a Fan will depend on a brand’s objectives, the context and the willingness to build engagement on a long term basis.
Well, brand marketers need to stop and analyse the objective of the same. This helps them generate awareness of themselves and their brand services. Brand marketers need to keep a tap of how much value, sales, awareness & loyalty gets generated as a result of increasing their brand’s Facebook community or fans.

Are you thinking about the best ways to get Facebook Fans? Here are some:

  • · Turn fans into friends
  • · Re-post their content; give them a shout out for their work
  • · Take fans behind the scenes
  • · Don’t just post and leave, return and follow up, update them
  • · If you got a news fans can use it, share it
  • · Get input from them, post a link to your story and ask a question
  • · Listen – let your fans guide you to great stories

Facebook Brand Fans are more likely to be the users of that brand; spend more than non-fans, are loyal, and recommend your brand. In order to determine & understand the credibility and value of a Facebook fan there are certain things that need to be done.

One can do this by:

  • · Measuring the rise in unaided awareness
  • · Recommendations received
  • · Frequency of purchase
  • · Customer service cost savings
  • · Clicks, lead generation
  • · Lifetime customer value

· Coupon redemptions etc. as a result of exposure to and interaction resulted from regular posts/content on brand’s Facebook page.

imageFacebook fans indeed hold a great value from the strategic perspective of a brand. They are undoubtedly as important as the economic goals too. Brand marketers therefore, need to focus on analyzing the fact that are the actions in the right direction in terms of driving fans or target to the brand page. Finally, what matters in measuring the value, is quality. Yes, Quality does matter- quality of the fans, quality of brand engagement with the fans, quality of conversion & attribution.

Check out this statistical report of Fans telling what has motivated them to like a company, brand, or association on Facebook is as shown below:

The ROI will bear amazing results when the brand focuses on providing long term value to its fans and build deeper engagement levels with them. This can somewhere in near future raise the cost of acquisition and at the same time retention of fans on Facebook. But compared to the value a brand will acquire, it’s more like a reward for the brand. What do you think the brands need to do? Is it just creating a value added experience for Facebook fans or something more? Do share in your thoughts.

Facebook Contests, Deals & Events on for Engagement

Monday, September 2nd, 2013

facebook-fan-engagement1One of the best ways to keep the interest of your customers in your Facebook page is through contests, events or deals. We all know that the most common and attractive word that attracts people these days is ‘Free’. Yes, and the more engaged your people are, the more they will keep coming back to you. There are a lot of ways to increase fan engagement for your brand, but where Facebook contests are concerned, these have been a great success provider to every brand which has tried it.

So next time you think of engaging with your fan base you can stick to simply tweeting, connecting on Facebook, replying and posting things or you can decide to step up and engage your fans through Facebook contests.

In a nutshell, Facebook contests:

  • – Increase the likes of your page
  • – Lead to higher engagement
  • – Increase the Edgerank of the Facebook page

Once you have planned to go ahead with this idea of adding a silver lining to your presence on Facebook get a clear understanding of your audience first. In order to resonate with them, find out what they are talking about, what they do on Facebook or what they clicked.

Deals on Facebook

facebook-deals-ukWell, guess you already own a brand page and there are customers across who love your brand too. But how do you excite them? What about the deals? Yes of course, the Facebook deals. Obviously brand managers would have tried it on their brand’s Facebook page. But, did you try something extraordinary to grab all the eyeballs to your brand on Facebook? Its simple and yet very effective. What you could offer for the real time engagement is maybe a free download of your eBook, a discount shopping coupon, some audio or video downloads or simply an access to exclusive area or location for only members.

Something interesting like a fan-only reveal code offered by brands is one of the best and most effective deals on Facebook. It involves rewarding fans for ‘liking’ a brand page and where brands can offer something exciting in return. Quick tip for a quick start: To start or set up a Deal, just click ‘edit page’ box in the top right corner of your brand’s Facebook page and then click ‘Deals’ in the list of tabs on the left. Even discount codes or coupons can be used to drive the traffic on Facebook to your brand’s website in order to let them know more about your latest offers and services.

ITC Hotels has frequent offers for its fans on Facebook.

Facebook Contests

With almost an array of engagement activities happening on Facebook by brands across the globe, another thing which is at peak is Contests.

Executing contests on Facebook is one of the powerful ways to increase & spread brand awareness and create an overall buzz. Not only this, the long term benefit is the customer loyalty that is built through customer recognitions and gratifications. A generic contest by a brand might include trivia questions about the indclip_image010ustry/market, submitting designs or anything related to art, inviting opinions about the product or maybe just posting pictures and asking fans to guess, name or caption it.  However, Facebook does enforce certain rules for the same but contests do hold credibility for the entire brand that goes ahead with it. A contest cannot be made conditional on just posting a comment, photo, a status update or maybe just by liking a wall post. Omron India also held a Facebook contest ‘Inspiring Tomorrow’ to promote the spirit associated with the Bollywood film ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’.

Facebook Events

It is indeed a great way to grow or increase attendance and reach new audiences. Are you as a brand thinking of planning a life or a sale event? Then its very essential to know that events can be set up in three ways: Open, Closed & Secret.

  • Open events can be seen and RSVP’d by everyone. These Events can be entertainment events, sales or grand openings.
  • Closed events can be seen by everyone, the details also can be viewed by everyone but only the guests who are invited can do RSVP to that particular event. For example, entertainment, fans-only sales, classes etc.
  • Secret Events are only visible to the guests that are invited and are not visible to anybody else. Not even RSVP ones. These events are mostly employee training events or meet-ups.

When brands set up an event, the event gets its own wall. What is important is to turn on the event wall for all as the guests would want to comment on the event, share, express their excitement about the same and even ask questions etc. Gaining fans through events is a great advantage. To increase the brand awareness, closed events can be used more effectively, wherein those invited are allowed to invite their friends too. A lot of fans invite their friends leading to more engagement.

Quick tip for a quick start: To establish an Event, click ‘edit page’ box in the top right corner page & click ‘apps’ in the list of tabs on the left. You will see ‘events’ in the list. Then click ‘go to app’ and create an event.

Here’s an example of a Facebook Event by ITC Classmate that garnered a lot of people to the page and was appreciated by the masses.

A Social Learning Experience

Monday, July 16th, 2012

The use of social media in primary education has been debated over a lot by the likes of social media experts, teachers and parents in recent years. While traditionalists say that allowing children to access social networks in schools would distract them from the very purpose of discipline and education, some argue that there are unseen and unfelt benefits of the same for students which outweigh the risks.

We think, if used with care, established social media platforms could be leveraged to build schools reputation and can also, on a microscopic basis, provide a sound education to students through involvement of teachers and parents. Of course it goes without saying that all the activities that a student undertakes on the social platform is under a teacher/parent’s able guidance.

A new book

It is surprising that a platform as popular as Facebook has yet not been an active provider in the education sector. What is more surprising is the fact that there are host of features that a student can capitalize to broaden their knowledge base or simply assist them in the process of learning.

For instance, a class can be divided into groups based on interests, subjects, extra-curricular activities etc. and students could be provided with access to Facebook groups under the teacher’s guidance at school and the parents at home. The groups could turn out to be quite an ideal platform to share assignments, homework, ideas and learning within the members. It can also be used as a collaborative platform for project work and assignments.

Also, features such as notes can be used to come up with feature writing on a particular topic. Teachers can use the page to:

  • Upload questions
  • Do polls
  • Use photos to educate
  • Quizzes
  • Notes

On a broader level, a school can run its own page. This would be a more universal display of talent and activities happening in a school. Not just that, the Facebook page can be used innovatively to live stream events/lectures etc. to a whole set of audience anywhere in the world. This would give collaborative learning a whole new meaning. Schools can work together on global projects. World history, for example, would become so much more fun if students of a country would explain their country’s past to a logged in global audience.

School PostAlso, the page could be a true notice board for parents. If used properly and correctly, the page could be a source of information for parents to regularly log back to see the calendar of events of a school. Pinning important events and notice to the page can help them communicate the news effectively.

One opportunity lies in the Discussions tab on the Facebook Page. A school can create a discussion about a specific topic and allow members of the community to share their thoughts within the thread. Page admins can engage with parents to understand their concerns and help the school address those concerns.

Bringing education to life

Information that involves more senses is known to be absorbed in a whole lot better than that which involves just one. It is always easier for students to learn new things if they see and hear things at the same time.

YouTubeThis is where a platform like YouTube can come in very handy. Not a lot of people know that YouTube has a dedicated YouTube for school service. YouTube for Schools gives you access to the hundreds of thousands of educational videos on YouTube EDU. This includes short lessons from top teachers around the world, full courses from the world’s best universities, professional development from fellow educators, and inspiring videos from thought leaders.

Teachers can log in and watch any video, but students cannot log in and can only watch YouTube EDU videos and videos their school has added on their school channel. All comments and related videos are disabled and search is limited to YouTube EDU videos.

Teachers can now use YouTube videos to:

  • Enrich classroom lessons
  • Spark a conversation
  • Make theory come to life
  • Tap into the mind of the visual learner

The universal encyclopedia

The biggest collaborative knowledge pool that is out there on the internet, Wikipedia, is a constant source of updated information. Teachers along with students can jointly set up internal wikis where they can add, edit, create and develop a learning theme.

Furthermore, incentivizing it with shares, likes, comments on other platforms only gives a boost to a student’s moral. Needless to say, when learning can be this fun, more students would be actively engaged in learning and sharing knowledge.

Answering the inquisitive minds

The question and answer platform, Quora, serves as a repository and knowledge pool that’s there on the internet. It is strictly a place for those who need accurate answers to questions related to a specific subject. Could it appeal to the students in schools? It mostly definitely will, we add.

QuoraStudents can create boards on the basis of a group of batch mates with similar interest areas after inviting them to the forum. After this it is pretty much creating a ready pool of discussions, problems, solutions in most of the recognised streams.

The summary section lets an individual collate the important points from all the posted answer and write one perfect answer that can be used by students. It is almost like a collaborative construction of an answer to a question.

A lot of schools in India have already started using these platforms. MIT Vishwashanti Gurukul, Rajbaug, Pune is a good example of such a start. We would love to see more such initiatives. After all, of what use is technology if not used for the enrichment of the mind?

What do you think about usage of social media in schools? Do you think this could be a sound platform for improved education system? Share your views with us. We would love to hear from you.

The Facebook Ad Debate

Monday, July 2nd, 2012

Fb ADSWhen the Cannes Lions were being announced earlier this month, one campaign made for a very interesting watch. Not only because it was a well planned and executed campaign, as you would expect from any shortlisted campaign, but also for a very different reason.

Dove Ad Makeover campaign was a mission in driving home the brand’s key message, ‘Be your beautiful self.’ The route it took was interestingly different. Using Facebook Advertising APIs, it allowed users to make ads and then place them on the network.

The user, mainly female audience, was invited to create ads that spoke about being happy with the shape and size that one was in and then used these user generated ads to replace all the ads that were targeting insecurities such as overweight, breast size and skin tone.

In order to do this, Dove went all out and doubled the ad bid for keywords used by the insecurity targeting ads. The campaign enabled women to flood Facebook with the positive messages that they had created. The campaign provoked a global debate, fundamentally challenging how advertisers use online media.Dove Video Captioned

The campaign walked away with silver at Cannes, but more importantly left us wondering about the route brands should take – the route taken by Dove to invest heavily in Facebook ads or go the GM Motors USA way and pull out from it?

To give a brief idea about GM pull out, just before the Facebook IPO listing was due, GM withdrew $10 million worth of advertising revenue from Facebook. They stated that the ads were not working for them. Well, GM also stated that they may skip the super bowl, the biggest advertising platform in the American market. What one makes of it is something only GM can explain but one thing is for sure that GM is looking at every possible way of cutting it ad spends by $2 billion as it had stated. Facebook sadly could just be one of the channels to face the axe.

What also needs to be noted is that $10 million that GM pulled out was just a small amount from the $3 billion that it spends on overall advertising. In fact, GM spends $30 million alone of creating content and engagement on its Facebook pages.

So why would they say the ads were not working for them? Is it possible that they have not understood the idea of Facebook advertising for big brands?

This brings us back to the Dove campaign. Here is a brand that is ready to spend almost double of what its secondary competitors are spending on Facebook advertising to gain an advantage. And what drives them to doing this? Engagement.

Unlike GM, Dove is not looking to sell products through its campaigns. It wants to engage with its audience. It even wants to encourage co-creation of communication through its ad campaign. The platform was all about engagement and conversations. And Dove has just extended the same concept to its advertising on Facebook.

Quite possibly, GM has missed a trick. As great as it may be in its ad campaign on other platform, it seems they may have not understood the platform that is Facebook. And this in not just a plain statement. Compared to Ford, GM’s major competition, which has more than 10 million fans globally with 4 million supporting Mustang page alone, GM has just about 383,000 Likes with Chevrolet adding another 1.2 million.

Ford CaptionedLike Dove, Ford to has managed its Facebook operation with engagement as its basic idea. Speaking to Brain Solis, Scott Monty Ford’s Global Digital Communications stated that “Ford is accelerating our efforts in Facebook and other social platforms. It’s all down to execution. We’ve found Facebook ads to be very effective when strategically combined with engagement, great content and innovative ways of storytelling, rather than treating them as a straight media buy.”

The ‘Reveal’ campaign that Ford ran for its Explorer 2011 model, outperform a traditional Super Bowl advertisement for a fraction of the cost. This only leads to believing that if the understanding of the platform is arrived at before the launch of a campaign, great things can be achieved. Read here how different types of Facebook advertising campaigns can be created.

Many would still debate if GM is right or wrong in doing what it did. What many might not be looking at is did GM base its Facebook campaign on its learning from other campaign? And if so, is that the right way to go?

What do you think about it? Do share your thoughts and opinions with us.

Time to get in the line

Friday, March 9th, 2012

TimelineSo the timeline for brands is finally here. After months of speculation about what all will it bring with it, we now know that the platform is all set to undergo another major shift in communication pattern. Emphasis will now be on visual creative and storytelling. We analyze the changes that the platform will see in this article.

Getting Covered

The most noticeable change that anyone would see is the huge space that is going to be available right on top of the page to put up a cover photo. The size of the cover photo is 810×350 pixels. In a way, this is the largest available space that Facebook has ever given a brand to reach out to their audience.

Cover
Cover Photo (click on the image to enlarge it)

While this is a big real estate for advertising, Facebook has not allowed brands to have any calls to action in your cover photo. You can’t tell people to like or share your page or have any contact information at all, including your web address, phone number or mailing address.

The highlight of the change

The timeline has also brought about a major alteration in content distribution. The content is now spread in to two columns rather than one single stack up. This means a side by side post will let you prolong your post life a little bit longer than before. Also, all post by people on the page gets segregated into one block which comes on the top most part of the right column.

Highlight
Highlighted Post (click on the image to enlarge it)

Not only that, like with cover photos, Facebook has now given you the ability to emphasize your story telling with bigger picture. So now, if you want a particular post to garner more views and appear more striking on the page, simply highlight it and the image and the post will spread across the two columns of the page, giving you one big eye catching post.

On pins and needles without landing tab

Yes. You read that right. The landing tab has been eliminated from the new design. The face of the campaign pages, the launch page for competitions and application does not get a look in the new design. What you do get instead is a pinned post.

Pinned post is nothing but a normal post, ideally with a campaign launch creative, which can be pinned to the top of the page. Through this option, this creative will get the top post slot for a period of seven days. The idea is that while you may not be able to get people to land on a particular tab, you can make them notice the main campaign first up. The pinned post comes with a small orange tag on the right top corner.

 pinnedPinned Post

This could have been put up on the cover page but then with cover page restriction of no call to action and no communication, that idea gets tossed out. Thus, this makes the pinned post the only alternative for a landing tab.

Every milestone counts

Facebook has always wanted people to document their life by sharing posts, videos and photos. Even relationships and friendships are highlighted in the personal profile. That is what Facebook has brought to the brand timeline.

Documenting the progress of the brand through milestones. The day the brand came in to existence, that new office, the 100th employee or the letter of appreciation from a famous customer. Facebook wants the brands to narrate those things to its audience. Make it more human than ever before. Audience of the page can directly navigate to a particular year via the timeline.

milestoneThis is quite literally, Facebook’s way of telling the brand managers to stop worrying about the numbers on the page but building a strong brand. Bring out the history and the emotions associated with the brand before you go looking for the ROI.

Tab dancing

With the new two column layout, the new tab has lost out majorly. The list of tabs and application that was there below the profile picture now gets lost. And almost become invisible. Though they have been moved right under the cover photo, there is a restriction of only 4 tabs to be visible while the rest get demoted into a drop down.

Tabs
Tabs

Amongst those 4 visible ones, the first one is always going to be that for photos. That leaves only 3 visible tabs for your competitions, applications, likes, notes and all that you want to do. So what will be needed is a more planned approach to launch of applications and campaigns. Making sure that there is no overlap so that each campaign can get a proper display in the tabs.

Tab Size
New Tab Size (click on the image to enlarge it)

Once on the tab, the creative space that the tab gets is now 810 pixels as compare to 510 before. This means there is a lot more space for you to put images and copy. A good brand would use this intelligently.

The Backend

Another change with the Timeline is the location of the Insights. You can now access them by clicking on the Admin Panel in the upper right corner. The Admin Panel has much different navigation than before, but everything appears to be there. From the Admin Page, you can also invite your email contacts, invite friends, share your page and create an ad from the Build Audience drop-down menu.

Insight
Insight (click on the image to enlarge it)

One of the capabilities will be to easily request a name change for your page. This name change is the title of your page, not the custom URL you may have set for your page. Great news for people who have changed their company branding, have had a misspelling in the name or have other tweaks they have wanted to make.

Messages                            Messages

Pages will also have the ability to receive messages from fans. The Message feature can be turned on or off from the Manage Permissions area of the Admin Dashboard. Messages can only be initiated by a fan—they cannot be initiated by the page to a fan. The page can reply to the message sent.

Reaching Out

The ads have got a makeover. They will be larger and come in form of Reach Generator and Premium on Facebook. The Reach Generator is designed to reach more of your existing fans than you currently are reaching through the news feed. Premium on Facebook is designed to distribute your stories to new connections and will be shown on the right side of the home page, in the news feed, in mobile streams and when someone logs out of Facebook. Beta testing has shown that the reach for these products through in line feed push can go up to as high as 80 to 90% of total estimated reach.

With Reach generator, the posts on the wall will be used to reach the audience. That means a higher engagement can be expected through this paid mechanism. This makes the job of page admin that much more important as s/he would need to decide which post should be best used for such a campaign.

In the pipeline

While these are the major changes that have happened as of now, few more features would surely be added in the new system soon. This includes Facebook offers. Facebook Offers are like Facebook Deals on steroids. The post is sent through the news feeds of your fans, which is much more visible. There are easy ways to share the Offer, both through the post itself and then when the Offer is claimed. Fans get the Offer by clicking the Get Offer link

Fan Gating, another standard feature in pre timeline era used to get people to like the page, is currently missing. This is something most experts believe will soon be brought back since it forms a part of loyalty program.

Changes to Facebook have always made brands nervous along with their agencies. But this time around, the nervousness is more about the things that have been dropped out rather than the ones that have been added. But it is clear from all these changes that Facebook wants the brands to build brands on its real estate rather than sell.

FACEBOOK RIP? NOT SO FAST…

Sunday, January 1st, 2012

No less than TIME magazine themselves asked whether Facebook is on a decline. While I understand it’s fashionable to ask whether products that are seemingly approaching the plateau of their product life cycle – are dying out, I do not think Facebook’s going anywhere.

And why? (I like to analyse questions like these from an emprical and this-is-how-we-work way rather than cull out numbers, graphs and stats that can be used to say anything)

1. It’s become our Flickr and Picasa: Apart from professional photographers and enthusiasts who benefit from pro features, I can’t recall too many people using either service anymore. Let me put it this way – you’re just back after a vacation. Or a friend’s birthday party. Or just transferring photos you’ve taken using your phone cam. What do you do with them? My guess is, Facebook and tag. And one doesn’t need stats to say how important photos are to the Facebook experience.

2. It’s too well entrenched in the ecosystem: Ecosystems will always survive. Or rather, killing them off is more difficult. Cases in point – Apple’s iPod-iTunes Store, Kindle-Kindle Store-third party sites (like Kindlefeeder). This is why these products will always have an edge over say, a Philips MP3 player or Barnes & Noble’s Nook. And really, it’s hard to picture a website that’s so well placed itself across the web as much as Facebook. From Like buttons on your favourite sports websites, to Fanboxes on your favourite brand page. Companies too, are rapidly reaching the point where the number of people on their Facebook page is akin to ‘mine’s bigger than yours’.

3. Facebook adapts: Some would say a little too well, with way too many changes made in the last year alone. But that’s a good sign – one of constant evolution. The news feed allows you to filter things out, and is increasingly delivering feeds of friends and pages you really interact with. Photo tagging has become stunningly easier. Design changes make Facebook so well integrated with your life. If there’s a trend happening on social media, I don’t think Zuck’s got a team of people who’re going to be clueless. If worldwide, people stop sharing links, then Facebook will change accordingly. Facebook’s shown that it’s not scared to kill off features that it feels are no longer required.

4. Facebook backs itself: Sure, it takes a lot of user feedback into consideration, we’re sure, but you’ve got to hand it to them – they back themselves. I see a lot of Steve Jobs’ old philosophies here – including the legendary “It’s not the consumer’s job to know what he wants.”

5. What, we’ve got to shift again?: No matter what happens in the online space, I cannot fathom us not having thousands of our photos online, a space to pimp our blogposts and a place to be connected (in a level at least one step above email) to our friends. If Facebook goes away, where do we do all this? I definitely do not envision ANOTHER social networking site (heck, we just got over hi5, Orkut and Myspace).  Neither is Twitter going to steal FB’s audience. People are comfortable with Facebook, and I cannot see the network migration happening again. Not for a long, long time.

We’ve seen how loath people are to shifting to a new networking site, one even with the money and user data of Google. One popular cartoon shows how to post on social networking sites using a flowchart. One arrow, answering ‘No’ to ‘Do you want anyone to see the update?’ points to Google+.

Go ahead and post that update and water those plants. Facebook ain’t going anywhere.
