Use Facebook to promote your brand

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

I love Facebook.

There I said it. The reason I was having dilemma stating it openly was that till all this while I considered it as one more yuppie social networking site that will die a quick natural death. But I was wrong. And that only makes me happy. Having turned an entrepreneur, I have realized the kind of benefits I have reaped from its features.

So this post is to those features that each of you can use to promote your brand. Use them wisely and you will experience success whichever category your brand may be operating in. Here goes:

1. Start a Community:

As Facebook is all about networking, it is only right to start a community related to your brand. Keep the community generic in nature with the objective of adding value to people by providing them content – text or visual. Community allows people to join in and share their views. It becomes a good platform to interact and dialogue. Since all like minded people will join in, you know that all members would be your potential consumers. A word of caution here: Do not bombard them with only brand messages but try to be informative too. Community allows you to upload pictures, videos, write on walls, start discussions; basically enough opportunities to interact with people.

2. Profile Page:

Sections on profile page:

The profile page is the most critical and you must use it optimally. There are sections on the profile page that can carry your brand information which is easy for your friends to find. Given below are the pictures which highlight the places that can be used to guide your friends and fans to your brand website or blog.

Status Updates:

This is Facebook way of micro blogging. And they have got it right. It is one of the most used feature already. Its fun reading status updates of friends and then commenting on them. This feature should be used creatively to talk about your brand. Make it interesting, unique, creative, first ever whatever that captures eyes balls.

Using Tabs:

You can add tabs next to the Wall and the Info area as is shown in the picture below. Add other tabs like Photos, Videos, Blog Cast which will further help your friends find out more about your brand. Update them by adding relevant pictures, videos (ads in some cases) and blog posts.

3. Incorporating Applications:

I have personally found several applications of great value. These should be added to your profile as well as your brand’s.

One is Simplaris blogcast:

This application automatically updates your blog feeds and publishes it in your FB account. So whenever you have added a new blog post, this app will get that feed and publish it in your profile thereby generating visibility. So all your friends would know that you have uploaded a new post without you having to tell them.

Second app that I like is Web Presence: Consolidates brand presence across platforms in one box

This app helps you in giving out all the places in the Internet where you have a presence. So this app consolidates all the presence in one box. So add on your blog address, your twitter account, Photo account on Flickr or Picassa, your videos on You Tube, your bookmarks on Delicious or Magnolia. Put it all in as this will help your fans connect with your brand on several other platforms too.

The third app is Twitter update. You can send out tweets from this app that is installed in your FB profile. This saves the trouble of login to Twitter separately. You can use twitter app and FB status updates as announcement platforms.

4. Creating Brand Page:

Facebook allows you to create a brand page where all the details about the brand can be added. This is more direct approach of brands connecting with people. Users can become fans of your brands thereby becoming loal ambassadors. The wonderful aspect is that fans can comment on the brand, its features and its advertisements. There are other features like Wall and Discussion Board where the conversations and discussions between the brand and users and even among users can be carried out. The fan page can be used by the brand to announce its on-ground events, invite users to participate in contests or update on new variant launches.

I recently become fan of Phantom sweet cigarettes that I enjoyed immensely as a kid. It was very nostalgic to find its brand page and I immediately signed on to become its fan. Now I get regular updates on what is the company planning as its new launch and I quite look forward to it!!

The golden rule that applies to all the above points is that the brand must be alive on FB. It must be updated regularly. There must be one person to accept and listen to user’s feedback on fan pages and communities. The action of each user should be acknowledged which makes the community active and ensure participation at all times.

Food for thought – Content for Blog

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

Most number of mails that we get revolve around content for blog. It appears that most bloggers start off writing about a certain subject and then slowly lose way. That happens because they feel that there aren’t many readers on the subject they are writing!! Well, maybe that could be the case if you are writing about very specialized subjects. For most of the others there could be other problems plaguing us.

We have listed out few of them. Check out for yourself if your blog is not party to this.

·         Blogs are fairly unregulated in content. But be careful and sensitive to what you write. A lot of impressions are formed about you as a person while reading your posts. I have read many blogs that talk about ‘sex’ or ‘race and caste discrimination’ but treat the subject with so much maturity that it generates healthy debates and comments.

·         It’s a myth that blogs specializing on humour get more hits. I have read several blogs on gardening or bike repair that consistently get more hits than most arbit funny blogs. What matters is that you are providing something of value to the reader.

·         The average blog post size should be 450 – 550 words. There is no official documentation on this but more about discussion with successful bloggers. Break up your post into series of blog posts if you intend to cross that limit.

·         Write the ‘About Us’ column seriously. I have noticed that most users read that section first after landing on your blog. Guess it’s the innate curiosity to know more about the author. Your About Us page must mention who you are, what you do and what subjects does your blog cover.

·         Give an appropriate title to your blog. Remember you will be mentioning it for creating visibility. It must give users an idea of what they will find when they visit your blog

·         Participate in communities and comment on other blog posts too. Subscribe to feeds to other bloggers – their post could spark of new thought in your mind.

Generate hits for your blog!!

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Universal truth – We all want attention. Be it in the form of spotlight shining on us, people seeking our autographs or merely getting more readers for our blog. The last one is what we will be tackling in this post. Unlike common perception, it is not a difficult task to generate readers for your blog. And this surely is not by spamming inbox of all your friends!! Your blog must have these features before you start promoting it

Go through these suggestions and try them out for yourself for your blog.

·      Registering at directories:

Like any product listing, blogs too have directories where they can be listed. There are Indian blog directories like ‘desiblogs’ and ‘indiblogs‘ among others where you can list your blog under appropriate section. There are also international blog directories like ‘blogcatalog‘ and ‘mybloglog‘ among others which generate high level of leads to your blog. For bloggers who have been blogging for more than 5 months and have more than 50 articles then you can register it with Labnol – started by Amit Agarwal

·      Linking your blogs:

Ensure that your blog posts have links with other blogs and websites especially if you have borrowed their thought or writing in continuation to that original article mentioned there. Likewise other bloggers too will create links with you and this cross linking between blogs will help in generating traffic.  Most of the bloggers also maintain a blog roll on the sidebar of their blog

Do visit other people’s blogs and leave comments. Everyone likes to know that they have been read and commented upon.

·      Register on User Voting sites:

There are several user voting sites like Digg, Reddit among others. You must submit your blog post to these sites and users who read your post have the option of voting for it. The more the votes your post collects, the higher up it goes in visibility. While there are no written reports but posts with high dig votes also score high with Google search engine.

Digg voting button on blog post

Incorporate the Digg voting button in your blog post itself so that readers can vote from there rather than logging on to Digg for that. Currently, there aren’t many Indians using Digg but that’s just  a matter of time. Also if your content cuts geography then these sites will definitely boost traffic substantially.

·      Title of Blog Post:

My experience shows that writing negative framed titles generates more traffic than something that is plain and appropriate. The title of the post has to induce or tempt the reader to click and read more of that post.

For eg. ‘Microsoft’s browser market share under threat’ as title will generate more hits than ‘Google launches its new browser’

·      Emails & Social Networking Sites:

Promote your blog post by aggregate your blog feeds to your profile on social networking sites so that you can drive traffic from your profile site too. Use signatures mentioning your blog title and link in your emails. Read the post Using Facebook to promote brands for information on how blogs can be integrated in your Facebook profile.

·      SEO your blog:

SEO ensures that your blogs gets better visibility and rank higher when a user writes related key words in a search engine. Most of the blogging sites like WordPress, Blogger, Typepad, Rediff etc do SEO by themselves. Between all of them, I have found wordpress to be more SEO-ed than others.

·      Sharing and Bookmarking your posts

Make it easier for people to save or bookmark your blog post or send it to their friends. Use tools like Add this’ or Add To Any’ for this. You have to simply register your blog at those sites and select the HTML code that they provide you. Insert the code in the master template so that your each new post will carry sharing option.

Remember, ultimately the participation of users and hits also depend heavily on the popularity and informatory nature of the topic you have written on.

Essentials of a Blog – Part 2

Saturday, October 18th, 2008

This is the second in series of the essentials of a blog. In the first part we spoke about content, layout and subscription features. There are sevral ways to increase visibility for your blog but right now let’s continue with highlighting some of the other features that are a must for your blog before you start promoting it.

1.    Maintain a blog roll

Links of other bloggers
Links of other bloggers

Blog roll is an individual’s favourite list of blog links that you have mentioned in the side bar of your blog. Most of the bloggers exchange links in order to increase their visibility and get more readers. The blogs links could be about subjects related to what you write about or could be on your other interests you pursue.

2. Provide links in each of your blog post

It is a good idea to link your each blog post with either other blogs to some of your earlier posts. This allows the user to also get access to other interesting posts too. The links also provide you more visibility and hence more hits as other bloggers too will link their posts with yours. This is not a rule but is an accepted practice.

Whenever you provide links from your blog post to other blogs, always select ‘_blank’ option. This will ensure that a new window opens up when the user clicks on that link. The idea being that you don’t want the user to go away from your blog.

3. Categorize your content

Various subject sections
Various subject sections

It is possible to index your blog posts into various categories and display it in the sidebar of your blog. You must use this feature if you intend to write on several sections or genres.

This feature lists out for the user the different categories or section he or she can read on your blog and accordingly select the post of their liking.

4.       Tag your posts

Before publishing of any post, mention key words as your tags. Tags are like names for your posts. You must accurately define them for each post so that those posts come up when a user is searching on that particular subject using any search engine.

Tags for each blog post

There are other features too that one can incorporate like search box that allows users to seek out information on your blog. You can also have category or tag clouds – these highlight that subjects that are mostly written about or are being read or debated on that blog

This ends our essentials of a blog series. Do write in your comments if you would like to add more or have any queries. Having added these features, you can go start promoting your blog. Do read our series on Essentials of a Website

Essentials of a Blog – Part 1

Saturday, October 18th, 2008

I hear people saying that blogging has really caught on. I wouldn’t go that far – possibly the term ‘blogging’ surely has caught on!! A lot of people do start their blogs and then get lost somewhere down the lane. A lot of it could possibly because of the low hits their blogs are generating. I think it’s mostly because some of the essential aspects of a blog are missing!!

So, it wouldn’t be bad idea to explore this subject more. What we are going to do here is clean up the dust that has settled on the blog, enhance it with few tools and list out few essentials that are a must for each blog!!

1.    First things first. Your blog is your own identity!!

Blogs are a reflection of you as a person. Feel free to write in your own inimitable style. The same rule applies for corporate blogs too. Each brand enjoys a certain personality and character and blogs have to remain true to that brand value.

Don’t worry about being judged. As long as your blog post uses language that is simple and easily understood, there is no right or wrong here.

2. Update your blog regularly

Don’t ever forget that writing down your views was the first and foremost reason to start the blog. It takes a certain amount of discipline to run your own blog. Decide whether you are up for it before starting one. Do you think Times of India would have been able to retain its readers if it printed the paper just twice a month!!

3.   Have a neat layout

Most of the blog providers like WordPress and Blogger allow users to select their template at

Different kinds of Blog templates

the time of registration. Do take your time in selecting a right template. Templates come in various colours and styles but most of them are either two columns or three columns. Again here there is no right choice but keep certain points in consideration like selecting it.

Template should be reflective of the nature of content you are going to post online. It must allow the user to read your posts with ease. Have a standard font and font size while posting

4.    Provide the subscription option

Subscription thru feeds & email
Subscription thru feeds & email

This is by far the most important aspect of your blog. Feeds. Users who subscribed to your feeds get updated about your new blog post the moment you have posted this. It acts like intimation to the user to visit your blog again to read that post. There are standard sites like feedburner that allow you to incorporate feeds in your blog.

You should also provide the subscription facility through email. A lot of people are comfortable with that option too! It’s important to keep the Feeds and email subscription right at the top of your blog where it is easy to locate

This concludes our first part of the essentials of a blog series. The next and concluding part will highlight the other important aspects and features that must be there on a blog.
