A large part of traditional way of communication is swapped with the Social Media way of communication. This change and adaptation was expected as there rests a great potential for this sector to implement social media in the way they market or brand themselves as tourists and travelers. Not forgetting what some of the brands like Make my trip, Yatra, Travelguru, Expedia India, Kerala Tourism, Cleartrip are already doing.

Harnessing the power of social media for Tourism Industry will go a long way. The cut-throat travel communications online are also functionally leveraging tourism industry worldwide.

To start with,

Why would a Tourism Industry need a Social Media?

The reforms in the usage of Internet and the facilities one gets through it are tremendous. Nowadays, along with the industry experts, we find internet users publishing and exchanging information about their favourite destinations, photographs, videos, and reviews on the places they have or want to travel etc. what is more to this is Social Media spreading this information across places and with minimal or no cost. Word of mouth has always been proved to be essential part of promoting businesses. Thus, you can build your marketing techniques to reach this rising engagement of people that will render great prospect of profit to this sector.

You can basically create a buzz about your brand and services around the world with social media tools, showcasing and discussing about best travel destinations all over.

You can basically look into:

Monitoring: Travel and Tourism companies can analyze or monitor the preferences, reviews and interactions online and use it to generate more traffic to their brand increasing loyalty and driving sales.

Reviews by customers: During a travel plan, a positive review or feedback online is very influential. Customers make informed decision based on fellow travelers feedback and ratings by reputed travel sites like TripAdvisor for instance.

Social Media Platforms: From Facebook and Twitter to Bloggers the Tourism industry is penetrating the market aggressively. For example an attractive Facebook page to display ads etc. also works well with this industry. Location based search can also be done through Facebook or Foursquare making it more significant.

The decisions of travelers, tourists and other people are influenced by the technology, mobile apps and social media when they are planning their travel. Even the bulk travel plans by travelers are done via internet.

Though changing trends, booming technology and numerous options depict a great shift in the consumer buying behavior patterns; they still trust word of mouth. Digitally speaking, word of mouth is everywhere! For example – a status update by your friend on a vacation on Facebook, a hotel or an accommodation review on Foursquare, a trend followed on Twitter, a Youtube video, a travel blog and so on so forth. All these activities online create a spark of inspiration within the users of Social Media platforms. They view, like and get inspired!

With millions of users present in social media world they are sure to Like, Follow or Share the things they admire before planning a vacation!

Effective communication, commitment and authenticity in the response you make to your guests through social media are essential. Social media strategy will help you persuade your Tourism business to new heights. Therefore, use your social media presence to give value to your customers, treat them like royals, reward them; then see how they recommend your brand when spoken about travel.

To conclude on the points stated above, what is evident in the social media driven psychology of today’s travelers is that they rely almost completely on the resources online, wherein Tourism Industry needs to keep a check to strategize their targeting. Tourism Industry specialists need to upgrade to latest technology and concrete social media strategy to connect with their customers better. They also need to track the development of mobile apps which also prove beneficial at most places.

Integration of Social Media aids in establishing a brand with a strong foundation and promising the best travel experience. Therefore, a well planned central marketing strategy will help the Tourism companies go a long way in building their brands and making them known.

While a few major players of the Tourism and Travel Industry explain a remarkable presence on social media platforms, what do you think should be the next step towards leveraging their brand? What effort should be taken to create a long lasting impact on the population? Do you think Social Media tools, if implemented in a competitive way will help promoting and building their brand in the industry. Will Social Media escalate the interactions, engagements and excitement for the brand?

Bloggerati of the Fortnight: Sunil Deepak

sunilCurrent Position and Organisation: Head, medical and scientific support at Italian Association Amici di Raoul Follereau – AIFO

Areas of Expertise: Medicine, history, art, writing, research, photography

Educational Background: University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS), New Delhi, India

Blog Name: Chayachitrakar

It is not always that one finds a doctor of high repute and stature who has an uncanny passion for art, environment, films, music, photography and archeology. Add to this repertoire, a genuine inclination to read and write. Sunil Deepak is one such individual who is a classic textbook amalgam of science and nature. What sets him apart from many in his field of work is an acute eye for observation.

His blog, Chayachitrakar, in its most rudimentary sense, is a photo-blog that is presented in quite a unique fashion. The blog employs 3 languages to communicate to its audience, namely – English, Hindi and Italian. The name of the blog (in Hindi) literally translates into ‘painter of shadows’ and justifies its name followed by actions. As Sunil puts it across himself, “My challenge is to find 3 images on the same theme for each post. To look at hundreds of images till I can find something that unites them is a wonderful exercise.”

Dr. Deepak has been traveling around the world for about a quarter of a century and by the sheer nature of his profession and association with an international organization, he has been able to visit the remotest corners of the world. From there on, it becomes only obvious for someone with a passion for photography to capture the stills and take away a piece of Earth every time he gets a chance.

In this blog of his, besides some of his other professional and personal blogs, Sunil reaches out to the audience and bridges the language gap between cultures by going multi lingual. The most appealing part about the post besides the photographs itself, is the title and description given out. First in English and then followed by Hindi and Italian gives it a unique touch. He in fact, takes it a step further in the ‘comments’ section where he replies to each comment posted by graciously replying in the same language. Aesthetically, the blog is quite well laid out and a simple non-flashy presentation makes for a good stay on the page for a first time visitor.

For a doctor whose main areas of work are leprosy and disability to maintain a photo blog that gives insights into the very fabric of diversity in man and nature, it is indeed commendable and this rightfully entitles Sunil to be our Bloggerati of the Fortnight.

She writes in a manner of a story-teller, words carefully weighed and weaved in a pattern that eases and gives the reader a relaxed-read feeling. There are personal experience, handy tips, issues pertaining to solo-travel and other information well narrated and presented in various entries from time to time.

Aesthetically, the blog is well laid out. To begin with, most posts are ideally supplemented with photographs that are centric to the story. Bloggerati of the Fortnight: Captain Anup Murthy

Thursday, March 1st, 2012

anup murthyAviation industry is probably one of those sectors that amalgamate tourism, hospitality and infrastructure industries within one hot furnace and accounts for a major chunk of the world’s economic churn out. In a manner of speaking, Captain Anup Murthy, our Blogger of the Fortnight, who has over 25 years of experience in the field of aviation, has justifiably contributed to this ever growing sector in ways more than one.

Captain Murthy is an avid traveler who likes touching upon places and leaving a mark upon various soils. Currently, he is the Director at Jeteezy Pte Limited that specializes in aviation consulting, aircraft sales, charter flights and other aviation related advisory services.

Murthy takes time out to write his blog, http://mymysore72.blogspot.in/, which he sees more as his online diary. It is a way to talk about his many sojourns and hold conversations besides sharing his perspective on aviation, travel and socio-economic situations across locations he has traveled to. His blog gives a glimpse into the life of an aviator.

Most posts in the blog are well etched out, complete and resourceful with ample amount of photographs and videos that are either self shot or gathered from trusted sources that give genuine information. Blogs such as ‘100 Years of aviation in Singapore’ are a brilliant insight to how aviation industry has grown. Also his blogs on aviation shows and world war II hangers give the blog a holistic range.

In a first person narrative, Murthy documents his experience of stay, right from when he reaches till he leaves the place; all along the way, sharing any information that he thinks could be of help to the reader or a potential tourist seeking vital but lesser available info.

The style of writing is intrinsically fictional, where most posts appear to be in a form of a tale of the traveler. The blog is quite compelling a read if one is into long haul tales from the distant exotic lands if you ask us. For those who share our inkling towards such blog tales, we strongly recommend our Bloggerati of the fortnight, Captain Anup Murthy.

Bloggerati of the Fortnight: Rohit Sareen

Monday, January 2nd, 2012

rohit_sareenTravel and Photography they say are inseparable. One such blogger who has aptly justified this statement’s sanctity is Rohit Sareen. Even his blog name, ‘My Third Eye’ symbolizes that. In his own words, he sees himself as an engineer by degree, a manger by profession and an avid traveler, photographer and writer by passion who loves the rush of formula one and the thrill of movies.

This Mumbaikar’s blog is a traveler’s delight and a photographer’s encyclopedia woven in an artistic style that makes readers take notice and compels them to see it through till the end. The photo quality is superior and forms a good second hand exposure for anyone who might be willing to travel to that destination and doing some research on various aspects of the place.

Rohit, in a trademark first person narrative, has beautifully captured the charm of every place he has visited and thoughtfully documented it so as to give a glimpse into the socio cultural elements prevalent in the regions. Top it up with a smart ‘you might also like’ for a viewer who might have similar interests in a thumbnail format and you have a perfect dose of good reading and social sharing.

The site looks pretty captivating primarily because of the presence of High Definition images that are copyrighted by Rohit and posted. Also, the organization of the information is pretty slick too. From starting a blog because it was a cool thing to do to making it a serious attempt, Rohit has driven his blog a long way. No wonder Rohit has garnered some 30,000 views to his blog.

The ability to provide a great experience for those who have not been privileged enough to travel as him or those looking forward to gather some local information through surfing, entitles him to be our Bloggerati of the Fortnight.

There is this yearning to explore the world first hand that keeps me going.” She also loves to read and then write about what she has read. Her blog combines all of her three interests to form an amazing collection of articles which have generated 126,739 visitors.

Bloggeratis of the Fortnight: Savita Pillai & Madhu Nair

Friday, July 15th, 2011

In 2009, my wife and I decided to go off on an extended trip with no definite end date. We are into our second year and not sure when we would like to stop,” says Madhu Nair, co author of the blog 10 Year Itch. Madhu and his wife, Savita Pillai, wanted to try out something they had been dreaming of for a long time, a multiyear trip through India.

So on the occasion of their tenth anniversary, Savita and Madhu quit their jobs, sold everything back in the US, and flew down to India on 14th Oct 2009 with their 4-year-old golden retriever Shayna. They wanted to experience life to the fullest and build memories that would last a lifetime. And their journey has proved to be just that.

“I’m not sure how often I will write in this blog but hope to update it with details of every little step we take towards the trip. And then once it truly happens, I hope to blog daily… hope! hope! hope!” wrote Savita in her first post.

10YearItch is a chronicle of their journey through India as they explore, dream, and (re)discover themselves. Over the years, they have visited 20 states of India. From Tamil Nadu in south to Jammu and Kashmir in north. From Meghalaya and Assam in the east to Gujarat and Rajasthan in the west, Madhu and Savita have been across this huge land.

They have fond memories from as varied locations as world heritage sites such as Taj Mahal, Humayun’s Tomb, Churches from across Goa, Caves in Maharashtra to national parks like Kaziranga, Sunderbans, Gir and Bandhavgarh.

               India

Savita at India Gate, New Delhi

Their journey and the posts on each place they visit is now a ready reckoner for a lot of people who want to plan their visits to these places. In fact, this has helped them spin of a blog based travelers’ support group where they custom design tour itineraries based on travelers’ interests, needs and budgets.

That also means that their recommendation of places where they have stayed makes a great impact to people who take their help for planning their own journey. From guest houses in Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh to National Park stays in camps and resorts, Savita and Madhu have shared their experience with smallest of details including address, contacts and a personal rating on a scale of 1 to 10.

                   Ratings

Another awesome feature about this blog is the photo journey that Savita and Madhu take us from time to time. Many would agree that a photo can say a thousand words, and many places can only be seen to experience the beauty of the place. Our travelers have tried capturing such places through the magic of photography. In fact, some of the photos can almost transport you to the location.

                Leh 1

Not many people have the courage to chase their dreams. Fewer still are willing to share their experiences of following their dreams and inviting others to experience it themselves. It takes a real desire to rediscover themselves as well as the land they are travelling that can result in something like the 10YearItch project. For showing this courage and the desire to live the life to fullest, Savita Pillai and Madhu Nair are our Bloggeratis of the Fortnight.
