As the first decade of the new millennium draws to a close, it amazes us to look back at the year gone by. The decade has undoubtedly experienced it all – from the dotcom bust in 2000 to the Facebook founder becoming Time magazine's Person of the Year in 2010.
2010 has been a momentous year. Both for us, as a social media agency and for the industry. With never a dull moment, 2010 was full of achievements, challenges and more importantly growth. As an agency, 2010, saw us get on board prestigious clients like Sony Music, eBay India, Future Generali, the GMR Group and ITC Hotels amongst others. Discovering new technologies, integrating innovative social media campaigns and effectively handling constant changes to Facebook and Twitter made the year gone by full of moments worth celebrating.
For social media, 2010, was not only the year in which it found its place in the sun, but also outshone every other form of media. We can confidently state that the year truly belonged to social media. When a Hollywood studio makes an entire movie on social media and the founder of the world's most popular social networking site graces the cover of Time magazine, one knows that social media has truly arrived! With 500 million users, Facebook almost steam rolled Google while Twitter was buzzing with 50 million tweets per day, creating more buzz than Google Buzz itself.
But the real star of the year was Foursquare. With location tagging fast becoming "The" thing to do, the Mayorship battle was an incredible phenomenon that struck the virtual world. With brands flocking to the platform to engage audience for almost everything ranging from launch of a product to offering mega discounts, Foursquare actually managed to force Facebook to jump on to the location tagging bandwagon.
In India, the excitement over social media is palpable. It is infectious; it is now a living, thriving being. And in 2011 we see this excitement truly drenching the media world. So what do we see becoming big this year? We see Live Streaming on Facebook becoming big. We see Facebook Credits becoming a powerful currency in the virtual world. We see brand 'Mayorship' becoming a reality. More importantly, we see Social Media Marketing becoming as main-stream as they get.
So let's raise a toast to the good times ahead in 2011! And stay with us through the New Year for exciting updates on the social media world.
