About a year and a half back, a startup social networking site decided to ask people to let everyone know where they were using their services. Today, with four million users, Foursquare is more than just a game.
Foursquare is a web and mobile application that allows registered users to connect with friends and update their location. Points are awarded for "checking in" at venues. Users can choose to have their check-ins posted on their accounts on Twitter, Facebook or both. Users can also earn badges by checking in at locations with certain tags, for check-in frequency or for other patterns such as time of check-in.
With rise in the number of geo-location based platforms & users and with the likes of Google & Facebook also jumping on the bandwagon with their respective location based networking sites (Google Latitude and Facebook Places respectively) this could be the next big thing on Social Media Networking working on the concept of reviews and feedbacks.
Already, innovative marketing strategies from brands like Starbucks and McDonald’s have started offering loyalty rewards using foursquare. Brand managers are inviting costumes to their stores via Foursquare and are looking to make this platform a more business viable solution than merely a status update thing. How big this trend becomes is anybody’s guess, but as of now, being the Mayor of a place is as cool as being a real Mayor.
