It is important to understand the prevalence of social media in our lives. There are studies indicating that close to 40 mn Indians are online. But really nothing beyond that!! <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">So what are these people doing online? How important is social media to them? How do they consumer social media? How is social media impacting the purchase behavior? How can marketers leverage <a href=\"http:\/\/windchimesindia.wordpress.com\/2008\/10\/25\/social-media-terms\/\" target=\"_blank\">social media platforms<\/a> to reach out to their potential consumers. We carried out research to find out answers to these questions to help us understand and give an insight from an Indian context. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The research data that we are presenting is representative of 3 Indian cities; Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore. While we have received responses from people from other cities but they weren\u2019t <a title=\"Statistical significance\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Statistical_significance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">statistically significant<\/a>. Mere <a href=\"http:\/\/windchimesindia.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/22\/corporatewebsite\/\" target=\"_blank\">website presence<\/a> won&#8221;&#8221;&#8221;&#8221;t be enough &#8211; but it will require presence in communities,\u00a0discussion forums, blogs, networking sites etc. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The presence\u00a0will have to be genuine, value adding and continuous. There is no end date\u00a0to it. Also it has to be value\u00a0adding for\u00a0user to\u00a0referring\u00a0and recommend it to his friends.
